One of the cool things about my job is that I get to work with such a huge diverse group of businesses. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been designing a new logo and business card for Meadow Street Styles, a hair salon in Massachusetts. Heather, the owner, loves her own handwriting and sent me lots of examples of how she would like the lettering to look for the business name/logo. I found a font that matched what she wanted almost perfectly, and added a bit of flair to make the design a true logo.
For the business card design, Heather wanted four profiles of common haircuts she does in her salon. She wanted a profile for a man, woman, boy and girl. She sent me sketches and descriptions of how she wanted each profile to look. I have to say, it was so helpful to have a client who not only sent me good descriptions, but visual aids too!
I hand-drew each profile out first with pen. Originally Heather thought she wanted some “movement” in each profile, so I left some hair details in. I then scanned them in and vectorized them. After thinking about it, Heather decided to just do the plain profiles so I removed the strands of hair. Here are some of my sketches prior to removing the strands and final tweaks:
I loved that the card design wasn’t just a normal logo + contact info. I think Heather’s customers, both current and future, will be impressed by the cards, and the new logo is going to look fabulous on her business sign outside of the salon!
